Why Your Next Trip to Paris Needs to Include a Trip to The Foundation Louis Vuitton

October 1, 2019

The Foundation Louis Vuitton is an art gallery in Paris which is absolutely unmissable.

The gallery itself was designed by a world-renowned architect, Canadian-born Frank Gehry, known for his use of postmodern shapes and designs.

This definitely makes the gallery stand out from others and leaves a lasting impression. It’s a building that is breathtaking to look at, and equally breathtaking to be in.

The gallery has multiple exhibitions to explore, which constantly change.

Some of the previous exhibits include works by artists such as Francis Bacon, Claude Monet and Piet Mondrian; it is somewhere any art aficionado absolutely needs to visit.

The two biggest exhibitions shown in 2018, and extended into 2019, were by two iconic artists: Brooklyn-born Jean-Michel Basquiat, who is said to be one of the most significant artists of the 20th century and expressionist painter and protégé of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele.

Basquiat’s exhibition covers works spanning the painter’s whole career, from 1980 up until his death is 1988, and features 120 pieces in total.

Something extra special about visiting this particular exhibition is that it includes Basquiat’s collaborations with Andy Warhol, which includes several never-before-seen pieces.

Basquiat’s works were often about the absence of black artists at the time and his own personal depictions of African American culture, which also makes seeing his work, something clearly so meaningful and personal to the artist, even more of an exceptional experience.

The Egon Schiele exhibition is spectacular; not only did the gallery manage to curate around 100 of his works, but having them all in one space to see, and learn about Schiele, is really special.

With a style so distorted and modern, his work really makes it seem like he was ahead of his time.

The work is organized chronologically between 4 rooms in total so you are truly able to see how he developed as an artist. In addition to his paintings,  there are also drawings and gouaches.
